Sobering

This is a sequel to Avarice.

“Look Walllice,” She told me quickly, “I really do believe that it is that easy, but it’ll take time.”

I looked at her over the breakfast table, incredulous. Avvarice had been staying at my house for a few weeks now, eating my food, and benefitting from free rent, sometimes sleeping in my bed. She was supposed to be looking for a job, not developing schemes to make money. I don’t think I was in love with Avvarice, but I had an odd fascination with her. And I was a young bachelor, I wasn’t about to turn down the occasional free bedroom romp. That was my only real vice, my fascination with Avvarice.

“Alright,” I said, “Explain it to me then, this amazing idea.”

Avvarace grinned.

“Listen, Walllice, it’s not just an idea anymore! At this point, I’ve got it all planned out, I know what I need to do, I just have to do it.”

I looked at her, waiting. I said, “Then do it. Wait, actually, how long are you going to be skipping out on rent again?”

She waved her hands, “Don’t worry about that. If all goes well, I’ll be able to pay easy, even back rent.”

I liked the sound of that. Again, I waited for her to explain.

“Right, so what I really want to do is to make a transportation system.”

I squinted at her, “A what?”

“How long does it take to get from one end of the city to the next?” She paused, “It’s half a day! At least a cycle, if you don’t get lucky enough to walk at noon.”

I shook my head.

“I can’t believe you! It’s a genius idea! What if you could get from one end of the city to the next in half the time? All you’d have to do is go up a few flights of stairs.”

“Stairs!” I yelled, “No one likes stairs, Avvarice.”

Avvarice crossed her arms. “I just need a forger who doesn’t make garbage iron, and a designer. And maybe someone to give me a loan.”

I widened my eyes, “You’re not serious about this?”

But then I watched as Avvarice left the tiny kitchen and went to the door. I had no idea what to do other than get ready for work. I cleaned up after breakfast as she slammed the door, and then I left behind her.

As I walked to my boring factory job, I thought about the last few weeks. The third week was nothing but prodding the depressed woman off of the couch, like trying to get a child to play outside when they clearly would rather not. During their second week she started looking for work. During her third week though, she started getting up earlier and earlier.

I thought that she was getting more determined with each failed interview, putting her foot into doors, being a little more assertive. But I guess she was just crafting a plan, probably looking for people to fill out her team.

I don’t know. Really, Avvarice is a strange creature, but her not having money isn’t really a hassle for me. She doesn’t eat a lot, maybe she’s still extorting free meals out of men. She doesn’t use a lot of water either. In all, Avvarice was a manageable expense. Really, I just cancelled my newspaper subscription and spent a few extra dollars to have Avvarace as my entertainment. And I guess it was paying off, not that I was obliged to watch her crazy transportation scheme evolve.

When I reached work, I haven’t realized that I woudn’t be seeing Avvarice for another four days. But, I’ll talk about that at a later time.

Not sure why I made a sequel for one of my least successful works. Well, actually, it’s because I knew more was going to happen with her whether people were reading about it or not.

I think it’ll be really entertaining to see Avvarice apply the skills she learned selling herself to sell product instead. Maybe that’s just me. If you missed the first one, it’s Here.
